Obinna Ekezie Jr. grew up in Lagos as the son of former NBA big man Obinna Ekezie, who played at Maryland, went 37th in the 1999 draft, spent time with five NBA franchises, co-founded the Nigerian travel company Wakanow, and in 2021 opened Lagos' OBN Academy, where his son began serious training. Ekezie Jr. moved to the United States in 2022, landing first at St. Raphael the Archangel school in Louisville, Kentucky, before two seasons at Prolific Prep in Napa, where he won a Grind Session world championship and all-defense honors while an injury limited his EYBL 16U run. As a junior at Southeastern Prep in Orlando he averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks, earned Defensive MVP honors at the 2025 NBPA Top 100 Camp, and rose to No. 2 in Rivals' 2027 industry ranking. On May 3, 2026, the 7-footer reclassified to 2026 and committed to Louisville over Arkansas, BYU, Kentucky and Maryland.
