Boyuan Zhang's route to Louisville ran from Changchun, in China's Jilin province, through the Shanxi Loongs' youth system to Garden Grove, California. Born in January 2007, he trained at Changchun's youth sports school and starred for China's junior national teams: a bronze medal and 20.5 points per game at the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship, an All-Tournament selection at the 2024 U18 Asia Cup, and a place on China's 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup roster, where he averaged 14.1 points over seven games. Rather than sign with Shanxi and enter the CBA, Zhang moved to the United States for his senior season at Veritas Academy, averaging 20.2 points, second in the EYBL Scholastic league, and climbing to No. 46 in Rivals' 2026 rankings as a 6-foot-8, four-star wing. After visits to Oregon, Illinois, California and Minnesota, he committed to Pat Kelsey's Cardinals on May 11, 2026, joining Louisville's 2026-27 class. As of September 8, 2026, the official roster lists 12 players: ten newcomers and two returners.
